Warmup, Excerpt From You Need a Manifesto By Charlotte Burgess Auburn, Stanford d.School
📍Goals (destination)
- Today I…left home late to take care of our puppy. Because I am the type of person who considers what my animal companion wants to be or do.
- Last weekend I…finished the design of a children’s book authored by some friends. Because it’s important to me to foster close relationships to my friends.
- This weekend I…I will take my puppy for a walk and spend quality time with my family. Because I value time outside, family, and seeing the world through other perspectives (puppy).
- I’m looking forward to; I’m hoping for…my sabbatical next year to write a book. Because I have so many notes, sketches, and ideas over the years, I want to create a book from them and show that design is a lot more than problem solving. I also hope to get beyond data viz client work, which has consumed so much time over the years.
Now, look at your answers and ask why? 5 minutes
The answers should begin with ‘Because I…’ Look for words in your response that include ‘I want,’ ‘I need,’ ‘I care,’ and ‘I’m excited about’ and ‘I’m worried about.’
And right after you’ll find an interesting phrase about something you’re hoping to achieve…this is the kernel of an existing goal or value. Articulate that.
If you can’t, ask ‘why’ and respond with ‘because I’ again. Eventually you’ll arrive at something that speaks to your deeper desires and motivations.
- What’s missing from this list that I know I care about? Quality time with my mom. Phoning old friends.
- What do I secretly wish I were doing instead? Cartooning and fiction writing, which I used to love to do.
- What have I always wanted to do that’s not on this list? Learn how to bake cakes (like British Bakeoff!).
🚙 Values (motivation, the fuel in your tank)
